In 1969, the TSE [Toronto Stock Exchange] initiated a special project to implement the use of the computer in the exchange trading process. The program was named CATS (Computer Assisted Trading System) and was given the goal of ultimately becoming a viable alternative to the traditional face-to-face auction market on the Exchange floor.
